DIY Staycation ideas

It’s been tough since we first learned about Covid-19 and although things are starting to feel like they’re getting back to normal many of us are choosing to wait a little longer before we venture further afield for our annual holidays.

So, what can we do to enjoy a family break right here in our homes?  Well, here’s the team’s top 5 ideas to make you feel like you are getting that well earned family time without leaving your front door!

  1. Set up a pool in the garden.

We don’t all have the space or resources to build a proper pool in the garden but there are various other options available.  Even having a bright and cheery paddling pool will give the opportunity for the kids to have a splash about and you the chance to paddle your feet and enjoy a cocktail!

2. Turn up the music

Noticed that when you are away you tend to have less screen time? Try to continue that trend on your staycay, turn off the telly and turn up the music.  Music will enhance your mood and you’ll have forgotten about some of those classic tunes that remind you of summer and bring a smile to your face.

3. Make some space for play

Now’s your opportunity to take some time with the kids, what do they want to play?  What do you want to play?  Whatever age you are we learn from play.  Whether it be block play with your toddler or Fortnite with your teenager there’s the opportunity to do something fun and competitive.

4. Self-care

Self-care is different for everyone, whether it be a bubble bath, a manicure, a spot of yoga or having an hour to read a book, on your own, in the daytime, in the quiet (hello mums and dads who are reading this smiling).  Make sure that you schedule in time to do something that makes you feel happy and good.

5. Theme

So you couldn’t get to your favourite holiday spot this year.  Why not have a theme day?  Usually you go to Spain?  Maybe put on some traditional Spanish music, put up some photos of your favourite spots and order in some tasty tapas!

Hopefully trying out one or two ideas like these will be enough to make a great staycation but your approach to it also makes a great difference.  Think about these tips as you start your holiday at home this year!

  • Switch off your work devices
  • Take the time to enjoy what you are doing
  • Say no to things you don’t want to do

Lastly, it’s been a tough time, and things are a little different but different can sometimes be good so try and enjoy it!
